Recent Spike in Truck Accident Fatalities
According to a recent report, commercial truck accidents resulting in fatalities has increased, despite the fact that motor vehicle accidents overall have declined in number. In 2010, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that fatalities from truck accidents increased by 8.7 percent from the year before with 3,675 deaths overall. Motor vehicle accidents resulting in fatalities are still greater in number, but decreased by 2.9 percent during the same time frame.
People are calling for stronger regulations and are hoping the Senate will pass the Commercial Motor Vehicle safety Enhancement Act which would call for new safety regulations for truck and bus operators. Regulations such as the cell phone ban for commercial vehicle drivers are already in place, but many believe there need to be more regulations to decrease the amount of truck accidents nationwide.
